Meta-holographic displays

A touch‐responsive meta‐holographic display, which is promising for interactive holographic displays with touch sensing or motion recognition is presented by Young‐Ki Kim, Junsuk Rho, and co‐workers in article number 2004664. According to an applied surface pressure with a gentle finger touch, the floating holographic images encoded in a metasurface can be switched in real‐time. The liquid‐crystal‐integrated metasurface devices can be further functionalized to sense programmed stimuli such as electric fields and temperature.

Sharper nano-bowties squeeze photons tighter

Squeezing photons into tiny nano-sized spaces encourages a wealth of unusual electronic phenomena, including enhanced interactions with light that are essential to plasmonics. The tiny volumes of plasmonic nanostructures or nanoantennas lead to huge enhancements of electromagnetic field. These ‘hotspots’, which depend in part on the nanoantenna size and shape, turn out to be particularly strong in bowtie-like structures. The small gap between the sharp tips of the bowtie produce the greatest local field enhancement. But electron beam lithography, which is currently used to fabricate these structures, is limited in the sharpness of the tips it can produce and smallness of the gaps between them.

Nanocatalosomes

Nanocatalosomes are a new type of plasmonic bilayer‐vesicular nanoreactors with few‐nm intershell nanospaces, as demonstrated by I. S. Lee et al. in their Research Article on page 9460. They possess numerous interlayer‐confined catalytically active cavities harnessing synergistic plasmonic–catalytic effects and performing highly efficient solar‐light‐induced organic reactions.

Tunable resonator

In article number 1901932, Inkyu Park, Junsuk Rho and co‐workers introduce a tunable Fabry–Pérot resonator that has metal–(chitosan‐based hydrogel)–metal structure. The chitosan swells in response to changes in relative humidity; this change affects transmissive structural color of the multilayer structure. As demonstration, this tunable resonator is utilized for a real‐time colorimetric humidity sensor combined with a photovoltaic cell, which can lead to development of a self‐powered sensor.

Metasurfaces for Flat Optics

Metasurfaces for flat optics. Metasurfaces consisting of subwavelength optical antenna arrays have emerged as planar optical devices that enable many promising applications. Thesubwavelength antenna is designed to locally control the amplitude, phase, or polarization of light. Metasurfaces provide unprecedented opportunities to overcome the limitations of conventional lenses and have demonstrated promising applications, such as high-numerical aperture ultrathin lenses, high-resolution multicolor holograms, and optical skin cloaks. Metasurfaces have been developed for specifi c functionalities by exploiting new materials and design algorithms. The articles in this issue of MRS Bulletin provide a comprehensive understanding of metasurfaces and their novel applications. The cover shows the operating mechanism of a metasurface used as a lens (metalens) and a scanning electron microscope image of a particular metalens in the background. The metalens can focus light beams using phase control by the metasurface.

Highly efficient direction-multiplexed visible meta-hologram

A direction-multiplexed visible metahologram is proposed. We demonstrate monolayer direction-controlled multiplexing of a transmission type metasurface hologram made of hydrogenated amorphous silicon in the visible domain.

Hyperbolic metamaterials for the enhanced spin-Hall effect

The cover art depicts the spin-dependent transverse splitting, which is called the optical spin Hall effect, while propagating a +,ertical hyperbolic metamaterial. We propose and demonstrate the enhanced optical spin Hall effect by using a vertical hyperbolic metamaterial. The optic axis configuration of the vertical hyperbolic metamaterial supports polarization-sensitive transmission, leading to a gigantic transverse shift in comparison to the previous horizontal hyperbolic media, even with a thickness much smaller than the wavelength. The huge optical spin Hall effect with high efficiency will offer a way to realize spin-dependent control of compact optical devices such as filters and beam splitters.

Tunable metasurfaces

In article number 1801070, Junsuk Rho and co‐workers realize polarization‐encrypted nanoprints by tunable structural coloring with a combination of symmetric and asymmetric nanoantennas. The polarization‐encrypted nanoprints designed based on Kerker's condition are decrypted under a certain polarization angle of incident light. The demonstration of the nanoprints expands the scope of metasurfaces toward novel security technologies, and thus further shows their potential for integration with smartphone applications or a variety of Internet‐of‐Things technologies.

Resistive switching memory

A phase change material (PCM) is implemented in a memristive device as an emerging technology for the next generation of nanoelectronics. In article number 1800360, Junsuk Rho and co‐workers develop a programmable metallization memristor with a simple Ag/phase change material/Pt structure using an alloy compound of Ge, Sb, Te (GST). The performance of the memory device is improved by a facile nitrogen‐dopant method. Reliable and reproducible uniform switching characteristics are reported by the nitrogen‐doped GST device.

Hyperlens for biological imaging

In the first experimental demonstration of biomolecular imaging using a hyperlens, neuron cells are imaged under visible light. A large-sized wafer-scale device, made up of an array of hyperlenses, provides high-throughput biomolecular imaging, free from the laborious task of positioning samples precisely on single hyperlenses. The cover art depicts the conditions for imaging, where a neuron cell is lined up with one of the many hyperlenses in the array. The high compatibility of hyperlens devices with conventional microscopes and scalable nanoimprinting fabrication for mass production support their potential usage in imaging applications, including real-time super-resolution biological imaging.

Particle reflection

Advances in nanofabrication have enabled studies of chirality to extend from conventional ‘mirror image’ molecules seen in organic chemistry to three-dimensional metallic nanostructures. Similar to their organic counterparts these metallic structures display optical activity with each mirror-image form interacting differently with circularly polarized visible light. This optical activity is rooted in plasmonic effects which derive from the way the structures’ morphology affects oscillations of electrons in the material. In this issue Ki Tae Nam and Junsuk Rho demonstrate a solution-based method for synthesizing homogenous highly chiral gold nanoparticles and controlling their respective chiral properties. The researchers induce chirality by growing the gold in the presence of cysteine or cysteine-based peptides which enantioselectively bind to high-index crystallographic planes of the gold seeds. The process could lead to new opportunities in chiral sensing and active colour displays.

Smart SERS

Caught in a hot spot: A novel method for analyzing single molecules by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is reported. A nanojunction is created between a silver substrate and nanoparticle separated by thiol-cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]). Using the host–guest chemistry of the CB[6], single molecules were positioned and secured in the SERS hot spot. View the article.
